17-Jun-18, Dubai, UAE – The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA Dubai) held its 2nd Annual General Assembly last 30th June 2018 at Dusit Thani Hotel, Dubai, UAE. Filipino Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), aspiring CPAs and professionals from various fields and industries gathered for the oath-taking ceremony and night of inspiration from special guests and speakers, Deputy Consul General Renato Duenas Jr. and prominent inspirational speaker, sought-after business consultant and entrepreneur, Mr. Francis J. Kong.

“A ship is safe at the shore, but that is not what the ship is built for” – a powerful message from the PICPA Dubai Chairman and outgoing President, Mr. Lyndon Magsino, CPA, shared among the nearly 200 attendees in his welcome remarks. This is both a challenge and inspiration for Filipino professionals to be global leaders and a commitment of PICPA Dubai to be the catalyst in developing future Filipino leaders.

From its launching in 2017, PICPA Dubai has reached incredible milestones from social activities such as assisting CPA aspirants in SPLBE and by being the Auditors of Filipino Community (Filcom) during the recently concluded Philippine Independence Day Celebrations, to professional equipping topics such as New IFRS Standards, VAT in the UAE, Business Forum-Workshop, Cryptocurrency Seminars and Investment Summit.

Social responsibility
PICPA Dubai continues to assist aspiring CPAs as they prepare for the upcoming Special Professional Licensing Board Exam (SPLBE) this coming August. The organization will be serving in SPLBE as part of its aspiration to help our fellow Kabayans pursue their dreams of becoming CPAs.

Being an advocate of social causes, PICPA Dubai has initiated its Community Social Responsibility (CSR) Program. Gift-giving and fun activities, free air tickets to the Philippines, and inspirational talks from the PICPA Dubai Leaders were shared to our distressed OFWs at POLO-OWWA (Dubai) last December 2017.

Keeping true to its vision of creating future Filipino leaders, PICPA Dubai granted scholarships to four (4) students from financially challenged families in the Philippines.

Leadership and Purpose
A make-shift Ship, symbolizing the leadership of the PICPA Dubai, was passed on to the new President for FY 2018-2019, Mr. Emmajohn “John” Sola, CPA. Deputy Consul General Renato Duenas Jr. officiated the welcoming and oath taking of the new 2018-2019 PICPA Dubai Council Officers.  John Sola, an Audit Manager of KPMG Dubai started his speech by probing everyone to introspect: “What is our purpose?”

PICPA Dubai is our means to be able to accomplish an end. And that is to uplift the status of Filipinos globally by being leaders and encouraging everyone to be leaders in their own spheres of influence – a purpose we continue to uphold in PICPA Dubai”.

Having this in mind, PICPA Dubai will roll-out seminars and activities to equip and empower Filipino CPAs such as IFRS Updates, VAT Updates and best practices, Career talks, Business Development, Leadership and soft skills trainings and many others.

VAT beyond the first 100 days
Mr. Rob Dalla Costa, KPMG UAE VAT Director led the session on ‘VAT beyond the First 100 Days’, highlighting practical guidance on how to be VAT compliant and reflecting on the importance of a post-implementation VAT health checks. The session was followed by a VAT forum addressing practical challenges from the participants.

“Winning Disciplines for Success” by Francis J. Kong
Mr. Francis J. Kong graced the event with an inspirational talk on ‘Winning Disciplines for Success’. Participants were enlightened as Mr. Francis Kong shared his wisdom in achieving success by developing disciplines in the areas of intellectual, emotional, fiscal, physical and spiritual. He explained that mastering the ‘basics’ will allow you to drive spontaneous creativity in times of crisis. During his talk, he featured his Facebook page where he actively publishes inspirational quotes and wisdom for his followers, incredibly preventing actual incidents of attempted suicides among teenagers.

It is worth noting that earlier that day, PICPA Dubai officers held a special session with Mr. Francis Kong on leadership as he expounded on the critical skills that leaders should possess and stressed on the importance of sharpening these skill sets in order to develop their members – inspired from John Maxwell’s ‘Law of the Lid’.
